New Year and Winter Dresses for Girls

A New Year's Eve party, a winter wedding or a big family dinner: when choosing a girl's dress in the colder months, it matters just as much that the child stays warm and comfortable for hours as that the dress looks lovely. In this guide we cover fabrics suited to winter, colours that suit New Year, layers that keep her warm, and when to get in touch so the dress is ready in time for New Year.

Which Fabrics Are Comfortable in Winter?

With its dense texture, velvet keeps her warm and looks very elegant in deep tones such as burgundy.

Velvet is the first fabric that comes to mind for winter: its substantial texture keeps her warm, and it looks very elegant in deep tones such as burgundy, navy and emerald. The Burgundy Velvet Dress and the Navy Velvet Dress are a good starting point for winter occasions.

Satin and taffeta are also fuller-bodied fabrics than tulle and chiffon, and their glossy surfaces look beautiful in evening light. The Emerald Green Satin Long Party Dress, the Silver Satin Party Dress and the Royal Blue Taffeta Party Dress can easily be worn in winter too.

Light fabrics such as tulle, chiffon and organza are worn in winter too; you just need to add tights underneath and a thin layer that goes with the dress on top. Each fabric needs different care; we've gathered our cleaning and storage tips in our party dress care guide.

Colours and Sparkle for New Year

Designs with sequins only on the bodice or only on the skirt are more comfortable for younger children.

On New Year's Eve, surrounded by lights, decorations and a lit-up tree, gold, silver and rose gold tones naturally stand out. The Gold Sequin Party Dress, the Silver Glitter Party Dress and the Rose Gold Sequin Long Party Dress also catch the light beautifully in photos. Burgundy, navy and emerald green, meanwhile, give a simpler but equally special look.

With a sequinned dress, it's worth paying attention to the cut of the sleeves and neckline so that the arms and underarms don't rub against the sequins. For younger girls, designs where the sequins are used only on the skirt or the bodice bother the child less throughout the day.

If you'd like a shade you don't see in the collection, such as red, message us on WhatsApp with the colour and design you have in mind; with a custom design, we choose the fabric and colour together.

Layers That Keep Her Warm: Tights, Boleros and Shawls

In winter, what she wears under and over the dress matters as much as the dress itself. With short or below-the-knee designs, tights both keep her warm and complete the look; skin-tone or white tights, or a pair close to the shade of the dress, suit most designs.

If you've chosen a sleeveless or thin-strapped design, a bolero, shawl or light cardigan in the same tone as the dress is useful both outdoors and at the entrance to the venue. For families who don't want full-length sleeves but would like the shoulders covered, cape sleeves can be a middle ground; the Peach Organza Cape-Sleeve Long Party Dress is one example. If you'd like a sleeve detail, let's talk it over on WhatsApp before you order.

Also make sure the coat or jacket she wears to get from door to door doesn't crush a full skirt; a long coat or a cape that's open at the front crushes the skirt less. If the home or venue is warm, the layers should come off easily: in a centrally heated home, a many-layered design can leave the child overheated.

School Party, Family Celebration or Winter Wedding

Choosing the dress according to where it will be worn makes the decision easier:

  • School New Year parties and shows: as she'll be running around and playing, a light, knee-length or below-the-knee design that's easy to move in is comfortable
  • Family celebration at home: in a centrally heated home, a design with fewer layers won't leave her overheated; velvet or satin looks special enough on its own
  • Winter wedding, engagement or henna night: long-skirted satin, taffeta or velvet designs, with a bolero or shawl in the same tone as the dress
  • New Year photos: sequins and glitter tulle sparkle beautifully in the glow of the tree lights

How Early Should You Get in Touch for New Year?

  • 7–14 daysPreparation time (once the design and measurements are finalised)
  • 3–4 weeks beforeWhen to get in touch so the dress is ready in good time for New Year: by the first week of December

As every dress is sewn to order, preparation usually takes 7–14 days once the design and measurements are confirmed. Allowing time for discussing the design and for shipping, getting in touch 3–4 weeks before New Year, that is, by the first week of December, makes for a relaxed plan. As New Year and winter celebrations can fall in the same weeks in December, getting in touch earlier always makes things easier for you.

As children grow quickly, measurements are taken just before sewing begins. We explain how to take measurements at home in our measuring guide, and the steps of an order on our how to order page.

FAQ

Common questions

When should I order a New Year dress?

Once the design and measurements are confirmed, preparation usually takes 7–14 days. Allowing time for discussing the design and for shipping, getting in touch 3–4 weeks before New Year, that is, by the first week of December, makes for a relaxed plan.

Will she feel cold in a party dress in winter?

Substantial fabrics such as velvet, satin and taffeta are warmer than tulle and chiffon. If you've chosen a design in a light fabric, tights and a bolero, shawl or light cardigan in the same tone as the dress are usually enough; if the venue is warm, a layer can come off.

How do you clean a velvet dress?

For dresses with velvet parts, dry cleaning is the safest option; a treatment that suits tulle can damage velvet. We've gathered our storage and ironing tips in our party dress care guide.

Can I have a dress made in a colour that isn't in the collection?

Message us on WhatsApp with the colour and design you have in mind; with a custom design, we choose the fabric and colour together. We'll settle the suitable fabric options and the timescale together in that same conversation.
