Satin is not really a type of fabric but a weave: the threads are woven so that they make long floats on the surface, which leaves the face smooth and glossy and the reverse matte. This structure gives the fabric both a slipperiness and a certain body. Unlike tulle, satin builds volume not through the number of layers but through its own weight, and the skirt keeps its form as it falls.
On a child, satin sits smooth and upright, tidies the body and catches the light in photographs. In shades such as emerald green, silver and mint that gloss makes the colour look deeper, while in light shades such as blush and beige the effect is calmer. In cuts such as the short-front, long-back ruffled model, it is the weight of the satin that carries the back of the skirt evenly.
For cool evening ceremonies, indoor occasions such as engagements and henna nights, and events in the winter months, satin is the more sheltered choice, not as light as tulle. The thing to watch in its care is that the surface takes marks: water drops and rubbing can leave a dull patch in the gloss. Ironing the dress inside out at a low temperature with a thin cloth in between, and keeping it on a hanger rather than squeezed into the wardrobe, protects the satin surface.
