A Guide to Girls' Eid Dresses

A good Eid dress, the special new outfit Turkish children traditionally wear for bayram, is one that doesn't tire the child out on visits that run from morning to evening, is sewn from a fabric that suits the season, and lets her sit down and get up easily in her elders' homes. Because Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı) and Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı) move earlier in the calendar every year, decide on the fabric and sleeves according to the season of that particular Eid. As preparation usually takes 7–14 days once the design and measurements are approved, the easiest approach is to mention the Eid date at the very start and plan around the shipping time too.

Eid Is a Long Day: Comfort Comes First

In most homes Eid morning starts early; after breakfast come visits to grandparents, uncles and aunts, one after another. Throughout the day the child gets in and out of the car, climbs stairs, sits on sofas, kisses her elders' hands in the traditional Eid greeting, collects sweets and runs around with her cousins. An Eid dress should be chosen not for an event lasting a few hours but for this long, busy day.

The secret of comfort lies on the inside of the dress. A soft lining against the skin under a tulle or organza skirt, armholes and a waist that don't pinch, and a dress that doesn't ride up when she raises her arms make all the difference by the end of the day. On long car journeys the child may fall asleep in her seat; gathering the trims on the front and at the hem, rather than heavy stones and pearls on the back, stops the stones digging in when she leans back.

  • Armholes and waist shouldn't pinch; she should be able to raise her arms freely
  • Keep the back flat and soft; stones and pearls belong on the front

Length, Neckline and Sitting When Visiting Elders

In most homes shoes are taken off at the door. This small detail directly affects the skirt length: a long skirt that's just right with shoes will drag on the floor when she walks in socks or slippers, and tangle around her feet on the stairs. When deciding on the length, bear in mind that the child will be walking around the house without shoes; just above the ankle or below the knee are the most comfortable lengths for home visits. We explain what to look out for when measuring in detail in our Measuring Guide.

When kissing hands the child leans forward, sits beside her elders and, in some homes, sits cross-legged at a low floor table. That's why it matters that the neckline doesn't gape when she bends and the skirt doesn't ride up too far when she sits. High-low cuts look very smart in photos, but in crowded homes with narrow stairs the back of the skirt is easily trodden on; you might consider keeping the back a little shorter.

Choosing the Fabric for the Season

Velvet keeps her warm on a cold Eid day, but it can show seat creases after a long journey.

Because Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha follow the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, they come about eleven days earlier each year. That's why the fabric needs to be chosen for that year's Eid. Over the next few years, Eid al-Fitr falls in the last weeks of winter or early spring, and Eid al-Adha in spring.

On cold days velvet keeps her warm, while taffeta gives the skirt a full shape; just remember that velvet can show seat marks after a long car journey. In the spring months, satin, organza and lace give a light yet special look. For summer Eids, chiffon and softly lined tulle are the options least likely to overwhelm a child in warm homes. Also make sure the coat or cardigan she wears between visits is a style that won't crush the full skirt.

For Families Who Want Long Sleeves and a More Modest Design

Some families prefer their children's arms and neckline to be more covered for Eid visits. We can discuss changes to a design you like in the collection, such as lengthening the sleeves, closing the neckline or lengthening the skirt, on WhatsApp as a custom design request. The same applies to a design you send us a photo of; we'll look at the fabric and cut together to see whether the change suits that design. For details, take a look at our Custom Design page.

It's also worth knowing that chiffon, organza and tulle are sheer fabrics. A sleeve made from them shows the skin even when it's long. If you want the sleeve to look truly covered, it's worth discussing a lined sleeve, lined lace or a denser fabric such as satin or velvet. For families who don't want full-length sleeves but would like the shoulders covered, cape sleeves can be a middle-ground solution.

Colour and Trims: Sweets, Drinks and Hugs

The sweets, chocolates and baklava of Eid al-Fitr and the crowded tables of Eid al-Adha are a small test for light-coloured dresses. A pure white or very pale cream Eid dress may not stay spotless until the afternoon. Blush, pink, lilac, mint and green tones suit the cheerful mood of Eid and give away small stains less than white does; navy and burgundy also look lovely at winter Eids. For designs in pastel tones, see our pink and blush party dresses page.

On the morning of Eid al-Adha, while the sacrifice and the sharing out of the meat are still under way, waiting until these tasks are over before putting the Eid dress on spares it unnecessary risk. Eid is also a day of hugs; heavy sequins and large stones can catch on elders' knitted cardigans or wool jumpers. Pearls and small bows sewn close to the fabric on the front are therefore a more comfortable choice. At the end of the day, you can follow the steps in our Care Guide to clean stains without rubbing, in the way that suits the fabric.

A Few Notes for Eid Photos

Don't leave the Eid photo until the end of the day. The dress is at its neatest and her hair at its tidiest before you leave home or at the first visit; by the afternoon, both creases and tiredness show in the picture. Indoors, the best light is in front of a window that gets daylight. With flash, very shiny sequins and glitter tulle can glare; textured fabrics with little shine give better results in close-ups.

Heavy sequinning can cause glare under hall lighting and in flash photos.

For the family photo in the grandparents' home, choosing a dress colour that stands apart from the sofa and curtains stops the child getting lost in the picture. Having the same design, or different designs from the same colour family, made for siblings and cousins completes the Eid photo; ordering details for more than one child are on our Group Orders page.

How Far Ahead Should You Plan?

Eid dates are known months in advance, yet the Eid dress is often left to the last few weeks. For a dress sewn to measure, preparation usually takes 7–14 days once the design and measurements are approved. On top of that you need to allow the few days it takes to settle the design and measurements, the shipping time, and some leeway to try the dress on the child when it arrives. Any problem caused by the sewing is put right free of charge; there needs to be time left before Eid for that too. If an item is faulty, your legal rights, including a replacement, a price reduction or a refund, are not affected.

For online orders, shipping costs 250 TL per order.

So mention the Eid date, and the day you need the dress by, in your first message; the plan is made around it. Starting the conversation three to four weeks before Eid gives families peace of mind. Couriers can get busier before Eid and there may be no deliveries on the public holiday; it's safest not to leave delivery until the eve of Eid. We ship to all 81 provinces of Türkiye, and in Istanbul you can also collect in person from the Pendik atelier; details are on our Delivery page. Sharing the following in your first message makes planning easier:

  • The Eid date and the day you need the dress by
  • The child's age and current measurements, if you have them
  • A photo or screenshot of a design you like
  • Your colour, sleeve and neckline preferences
  • Whether you'll receive it by courier or collect it in person in Pendik
FAQ

Common questions

How far ahead should I order an Eid dress?

Once the design and measurements are approved, preparation usually takes 7–14 days; on top of that you need to allow for shipping time and some leeway to try the dress on the child. If you mention the Eid date in your first message, the plan is made around it. Starting the conversation three to four weeks before Eid is the most relaxed approach.

Which fabric is best for an Eid dress?

First look at the season Eid falls in. On cold days velvet and taffeta, in spring satin, organza and lace, and at summer Eids chiffon and softly lined tulle keep the child more comfortable.

Can I have a long-sleeved or more modest design made?

We can discuss this on WhatsApp as a custom design request. Send us a design from the collection or a photo of a design you like, and we'll look at the fabric and cut together to see whether your sleeve, neckline and length wishes suit that design.

How long should the skirt be for Eid visits?

As shoes are usually taken off at the door, think about the skirt length for walking without shoes. Lengths just above the ankle or below the knee don't catch on the stairs or when walking in socks.

Can the same Eid dress be made for sisters and cousins?

Yes, the same design can be made for several children; each child's dress is made to her own measurements. Choosing different designs from the same colour family also gives a coordinated but not uniform look in the Eid photo.
