A Short Preparation Before Measuring

Measure with a flexible tailor's tape. A ruler or a metal tape will not give a correct result. Have the child stand in thin clothing or underwear, without shoes, on a level floor. A thick jumper, a full skirt or layers underneath will add a few centimetres to the measurement.

It matters that the child stands upright but relaxed. Do not ask her to pull her tummy in or hold her breath, and let her arms hang loosely at her sides. The result is more consistent if someone else takes the measurements rather than the child herself. Write each measurement down as you take it; do not try to remember it later.

• A finger should slide comfortably between the tape and the body
• Note every measurement in centimetres straight away

Which Measurements We Take

Six measurements are usually enough for a party dress. It is best if you can take them all, but we can make a start with height, chest and waist.

• Height: measured from the top of the head to the floor, with the child standing upright.
• Chest: taken around the widest part of the chest, with the tape running level across the back.
• Waist: the narrowest part of the body; the line that creases when the child bends sideways marks the waist.
• Shoulders: measured across the back, from the point of one shoulder to the point of the other.
• Sleeve length: from the point of the shoulder down to the wrist, with the arm slightly bent.
• Skirt length: measured from the waistline down to where you want the dress to end; decide whether that is below the knee, at the ankle or down to the floor.

Age-Based Sizes Are Only a Starting Point

We prepare our models in five size options: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12 yrs. These age ranges tell us which pattern to start from; they are not exact measurements.

Two children of the same age can differ noticeably in height, chest measurement or arm length. That is why, once the age size is settled, we always take the actual measurements as well and cut the dress to them. If your child falls between two sizes, do not worry; we see this very often and the measurements resolve it.

Allowing for Growth and the Date the Dress Will Be Worn

If there are a few months between the day you measure and the day the dress will be worn, tell us. Children can grow noticeably taller in that time. Leaving a little extra in the skirt length is usually the most practical solution.

Deliberately going loose at the chest and waist, however, spoils how the dress sits. There are places where a party dress has to fit closely; leave extra there and it slips off the shoulder, the waistline drops and the work that went into the sewing does not show. Allowing for growth in length gives a better result than allowing for it in width.

• If the occasion is a few months away, tell us the date when you send the measurements
• Prefer to leave the extra in the skirt and sleeve length
• Give the chest and waist measurements as they are; do not add room yourself

We Settle the Measurements Together

Send us the measurements you have taken on WhatsApp and we will go over them together. If one measurement looks out of step with the others, or if the model calls for a particular cut, we will tell you which point to measure again. Measurements are confirmed on WhatsApp after the order.

If you are in Istanbul you can come to our atelier in Pendik and we can take the measurements together; we can also hand the finished dress over in person. We ship anywhere in Türkiye. Once the measurements are settled, our preparation time is 7-14 days.
