Girls' Dresses for Graduation and School Events

The right outfit for a school event is a dress that follows the school's rules, looks clear on stage and in photos, and lets the child sit down and stand up comfortably for hours. At graduation, pale, elegant tones come to the fore; on 23 April (National Sovereignty and Children's Day, celebrated in Turkish schools) and at school shows, it's the colour and theme set by the teacher that count. If the same design is needed for a class or choir, starting to plan a few weeks ahead makes things easier.

First, Find Out the School's Rules

At a school event, the first test for an outfit is what the school expects. Some schools want the whole class to appear in the same colour at graduation, some hand out gowns and caps, and some set a theme colour for a show. A quick question to the class teacher or the parent representative before choosing the dress saves you from having to rethink things later.

The questions to ask are clear: is there a colour or theme rule, is there a limit on skirt length and strappy designs, will the ceremony be held in an indoor hall or in the school garden, and will the child go on stage? For ceremonies at school, a design that covers the shoulders or has cape sleeves fits both the rules and the season more easily than strappy, open-backed designs.

Kindergarten and Primary School Graduation

At kindergarten graduation children are usually 5–6 years old; throughout the ceremony they sing, go up on stage and come down, and run to their families. At this age a lightly full tulle or organza skirt ending below the knee looks smart on stage without restricting movement. If a gown is to be worn, the fullness needs to be kept restrained; a very full skirt bunches up under the gown and makes it open at the front. In the family photos taken once the gown comes off, though, it's the dress that really shows.

At primary school graduation, at around 9–10, more grown-up cuts come to the fore: a satin bodice, a high-low skirt or fine lace details suit this age. A graduation ball or hall ceremony in the evening can carry a slightly more eye-catching design, whereas for a daytime ceremony in the school garden, light fabrics and pale tones look more fitting. White, cream, blush, lilac and pale green are colours that suit the overall mood of graduation. For ideas, take a look at our graduation dress collection.

Report Card Day and 23 April

Report card day (karne, the last day of term when pupils in Türkiye receive their reports) usually passes with a short ceremony in the classroom and carries on with a family meal or a photo session. First find out whether the school wants uniform that day; if free dress is allowed, a simply cut, knee-length dress is enough, rather than a design with heavy tulle and dense stonework. For the mid-year report in January, a design with sleeves or a substantial fabric such as velvet is more comfortable; for the June report, chiffon or fine satin.

23 April ceremonies take place in spring, mostly in the school garden and in the morning. In weather that can be cool in the morning and sunny by midday, a very light skirt that flies up in the wind or a long skirt dragging on the grass will cause trouble throughout the ceremony. If the school wants red and white or another theme colour, the colour and fabric of a design in the collection can be changed; you can send the colour you need or a sample photo on WhatsApp as a custom design request. Folk dance costumes, on the other hand, are decided by the teacher at most schools; the dress is usually intended for the parts that don't need a costume and for after the ceremony.

School Shows and Performances: Allow for the Stage Lighting

Textured details such as lace can be made out under stage lights, even from a distance.

At a school show, the audience sees the child from a few metres away under strong lighting. In this light, pure white and very pale tones can lose their detail and look like a single bright surface, whereas textured details such as lace, 3D flowers or a layered skirt can be picked out even from a distance. Very dark navy and black tend to disappear against a dark stage curtain. Mid-bright tones such as blush, lilac, green and gold are generally the colours that read most clearly on stage.

Sequins and stones catch the light and create a lively effect on stage, but can glare in flash photos taken up close. Keeping sequins to the bodice or the hem strikes the balance. If there's dancing, the skirt should stay above the ankle and the armholes should let the child raise her arms freely. If there's a costume change during the show, a design with a back zip that's easy to put on and take off reduces the backstage rush; bows and trims being securely attached also matters on stage.

Long Ceremonies, Photos and All-Day Comfort

School ceremonies often last longer than expected: what with speeches, class-by-class performances and the handing out of certificates, a child may sit on a chair or the stage steps for an hour and a half to two hours. During that time, a soft lining where the tulle skirt touches the legs reduces itching. Indoor sports halls heat up quickly with a crowd; a light fabric and a skirt with few layers make a difference in that setting.

In the class photo, a very full skirt on a child sitting in the front row can hide the friend next to her; restrained fullness is more comfortable both in the photo and when sitting. If a cap is to be worn, gathering the hair at the nape or plaiting it is better than a bun on top; a bun on top pushes the cap up. For ironing and storing the dress, see our care guide.

  • Have her wear new shoes at home a few times before the event; the stage floor may be slippery
  • Hang the dress up the day before and remove creases with steam on a low heat
  • Bring a light cardigan, spare tights and wet wipes
  • If possible, have her put the dress on at school, just before the ceremony
  • Choose the hairstyle according to whether a cap will be worn and how she'll move on stage

Class, Choir and Group Orders

In a group order, the fabric and colour are shared; each dress is sewn to the child's own measurements.

Having all the girls wear the same design at graduation, or a choir or performance group going on stage in the same colour, is a common request. In group orders like these, the design, fabric and colour are shared, but each dress is still sewn individually, to the child's own measurements. That way, every child in the class, whatever her height, wears a dress that fits her own body.

The way to make the process easier is to choose a single point of contact; usually a parent representative or teacher settles the design and colour on behalf of the school and collects the measurements. We explain step by step how to take measurements at home in our measuring guide; measurements are confirmed together over WhatsApp, and families in Istanbul can also have measurements taken at the atelier in Pendik. The dresses are shipped to all 81 provinces of Türkiye; for WhatsApp orders they can also be collected in person from the atelier. If siblings or cousins are taking part in the same ceremony, the same design can also be made for different ages.

Everything that is made purely to order, such as graduation gown and cap sets or costumes for Republic Day (29 October) and Children's Day (23 April) school shows, is gathered on our custom tailoring and graduation page.

Plan Early: Work Back from the Date

The date of a school event is usually known weeks in advance, which makes planning easier. The dress's preparation time is usually 7–14 days once the design and measurements are confirmed. If the dress needs to be ready for a particular date, saying so in your first message ensures the plan is made around it from the start. For group orders, collecting the measurements and the school's approval of the design also add to the timeline; so starting the conversation a few weeks ahead puts everyone at ease.

FAQ

Common questions

If a gown is worn at kindergarten graduation, does she still need a dress?

At most schools the gown is worn only during the ceremony. The dress is the main outfit seen in the family photos taken once the gown comes off and at the celebration afterwards. For a dress worn under the gown, keeping the fullness restrained helps the gown sit properly.

How does a white dress look on stage at a school show?

Under strong stage lighting, pure white can lose its detail and look like a single bright surface. If white is wanted, choosing an off-white tone such as cream or ivory and textured details such as lace, 3D flowers or a layered skirt keeps the dress readable from a distance too.

Can we have the same dress made for all the girls in a class?

Yes. The same design can be made for several children; the design, fabric and colour are shared, but each dress is sewn separately to the child's own measurements. Running the process through a single parent representative or teacher makes things easier.

When should we get in touch about a graduation dress?

For a single dress, getting in touch three to four weeks before the ceremony makes for a relaxed schedule. Preparation usually takes 7–14 days once the design and measurements are confirmed; if you mention the ceremony date in your first message, the plan is made around it. For group orders, collecting the measurements and the school's approval of the design also add to the timeline, so you need to start earlier.

Is it possible to have a dress made in the colour the teacher asks for?

Yes. The colour, fabric and details of a design in the collection can be changed as a special request. Just send us the colour the school wants, or a sample photo, on WhatsApp.

Is a party dress too much for report card day?

Report card day is usually a short daytime event in the classroom. First ask about the school's uniform rule; if free dress is allowed, a simply cut, knee-length dress with few trims suits the day better than a design with heavy tulle and dense stonework.
