Is it appropriate to dress a child in white or ecru at a civil ceremony?

Can the same dress be used for both the engagement and the civil ceremony?
If the two ceremonies are close together the same dress can usually be used, especially in the plainer styles. But since an engagement has a more intimate feel and a civil ceremony a more formal one, some families prefer a separate style for each. Send us both dates and we will weigh together whether one dress will be enough.
